Boston Redevelopment Authority. South End Urban Renewal Plan (first).
December 31, 1959
(Dec.) The plan calls for displacing up to 10,000 residents, demolishing 10%, 20%, or 40% of the housing stock, building a linear park along Shawmut Avenue, public buildings in around Rollins Square and today’s Peter’s Park, scattered apartment buildings around today’s Villa Victoria, and a large park near today’s Boston Center for the Arts. After meeting with serious criticism from residents, the plan is withdrawn in the summer of 1963 and a new plan is proposed in 1964.*
